UK-based publishers The LAD Bible, and UNILAD, topped the rankings leaderboard for November 2016 with a combined 6.8 billion video views on Facebook. BuzzFeed was yet again the most-watched media property last month, and on Facebook, over 39 different branded pages generated a staggering 2.5B video views. BuzzFeed, food, and domestic tips, seems to have found its natural home on Facebook; the brand posts food videos very infrequently to YouTube, and has only briefly dipped its toe in the water as far as Vine is concerned. In fact, food and drink itself is one of the most engaged topics that BuzzFeed creates video content around. And video continues to be a huge part of the publisher’s game plan, with the medium representing more than 50% of its total revenue. Moreover, it expects that video will contribute three-quarters of its total advertising revenue over the next two years.
As well as foodie topics, news and current affairs content always does well on Facebook, as users turn to social media to get the latest updates on breaking events. At #7 in the rankings for the most watched video publishers on Facebook, is NowThis which calls itself “mobile news for a social generation”. The news publisher, now officially known as Group Nine, is active on YouTube, and Instagram as well as Facebook, and in November 2016, it generated over 1B video views on Facebook alone. Although NowThis uploaded footage of the riots in the aftermath of the US Presidential election, and Native American protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, it was this heartwarming video about a groom asking his bride’s daughter to be his forever daughter that was its most successful, with over 86 million views (40.6M in the first 3 days), and 2.3M Facebook likes, shares, and comments:
