YouTube’s taking the fight to Netflix with new thriller The Thinning, and it sounds a lot like Divergent

YouTube has announced that several new original series and films are coming to its new subscription service YouTube Red to get us all excited about it.
The only problem is that one of their new acquisitions sounds an awful lot like Veronica Roth’s Divergent series.
But we’re sure that’s just a coincidence.
At the Television Critics Association presentation this week, the channel revealed the title and a brief description of several original projects coming to Red this year, including dystopian TV thriller The Thinning.
The Thinning takes place in a dying world where population control is dictated by an aptitude test in high school.
When two students Blake (Logan Paul) and Laina (Peyton List) discover the test is all smoke and mirrors hiding a larger conspiracy, they must go against the system to expose it and take it down.
YouTube Red has enlisted a Vine star (Paul) and a former Disney Channel actress (List) to lead their cast in the series – which happens to bear an uncanny resemblance to another YA series where the population is controlled with a test and not everything is as it seems.
And, seeing as it looks like the actual Divergent series will be jumping ship to television to launch its own spin-off series sometime soon, it seems we’ll have a number of YA dystopian TV series to flick between soon enough.
Set for release in Autumn 2016, The Thinning will join other Red original films/series such as Lazer Team 2 and Me and My Grandma.
YouTube’s answer to rival subscription services Netflix and Amazon Prime promises an “enhanced, uninterrupted experience across YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Gaming” and the service has already snapped up Channing Tatum’s Step Up as its first big TV series in the hopes of starting off on the right foot.
YouTube Red is currently available in the US, Australia, New Zealand and is priced at $9.99 per month.
