“My music isn’t like the usual Aussie hip-hop you hear. When I was growing up I thought rap was all barbecues, going to the RSL, maybe some politics and I couldn’t really relate to any of it.” Kerser says. “I’ve had people comment to me ‘you think you are living in the Bronx’ when everything I am rapping about is real. My struggles, mates going in jail – it’s all real there’s no fictional characters there.” Besides, for an artist who grew up in challenging family circumstances around Campbelltown in south-western Sydney, surrounded by neighbourhood violence, alcohol and drug abuse, stealing money “so we could get the cool clothes so we didn’t get picked on”, criticisms that his music upsets people isn’t so daunting. “I’m prepared for criticism, I just wish people would open their minds a bit and realise that is going on out there,” he says. “They need to take a trip out west and maybe visit some of the housing commissions ‘cos I’m not exaggerating.” Follow Kerser on Instagram and Facebook.
