It seems totally crazy at this stage in the game, but a lot of content marketers still aren’t very effective at all. Sure, there are some brands and even SMBs killing it with awesome content on a consistent basis, but only 32% of B2B marketers surveyed by Content Marketing Institute recently have a documented content strategy.

Even worse, only 30% say their organizations are effective at content marketing. That’s down 8% from last year.

Are we actually getting worse at content marketing?

Not necessarily, but the content landscape is getting a heck of a lot more challenging — that’s for sure.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in something really cool: a forward-looking experts video on what’s to come in content marketing in 2017.

Of course, where we’ve been and where we are now are excellent indicators of where we’re headed. It’s with that in mind that I suggest we’re going to see far fewer winners in the content marketing arena, but far greater jackpots for those who are successful.

Rand Fishkin, founder of Moz, agrees and says, “In 2017, content marketing is going to be even more challenging than it is today.” He explained that the sheer number of new entrants coming into the field means that every single channel that can send traffic to your content is becoming way more competitive.

Sam Mallikarjunan from HubSpot says we’re headed into a content landscape where video is king. Now that search engines can actually see and “read” images, visual content will become more important as well, he advises.

Sam also notes that we should start to see more mergers and acquisitions in content publications, as companies get better and better at realizing the value of blogging for business.
